Polished Concrete Floors

Polished concrete floors are one of Australia's most durable and versatile flooring solutions, combining timeless aesthetics with exceptional performance. Suitable for residential homes, retail spaces, offices, warehouses and industrial facilities, polished concrete transforms an ordinary concrete slab into a beautiful, low-maintenance surface designed to last for decades. Highly durable and easy to maintain, polished concrete floors are resistant to wear and provide excellent light reflectivity, helping to brighten interior spaces and improve energy efficiency. Their seamless surface does not harbour dust, allergens or moisture like many traditional floor coverings, making polished concrete a practical choice for both homes and commercial environments.

There are several different systems commonly referred to as polished concrete, and understanding the difference is important when comparing finishes and quotes. The two most common types are grind and seal and mechanically polished concrete. There are two main types of polished concrete, which differ significantly. Companies often use alternative names for each other. The most common types are:

  • Grind and Seal (also known as traditional polished concrete) - uses diamond grinding to prepare the surface before applying protective topical sealers. This system offers a wide range of finishes and colours and is suitable for residential, commercial and external applications.
  • Mechanically Polished Concrete (also known as Pyrafloor, Hiperfloor, Superfloor, natural polish, etc.)- sometimes referred to as diamond polished concrete, Hiperfloor®, Superfloor® or natural polished concrete, is achieved by progressively refining the concrete surface using diamond abrasives and densifiers. The result is a highly durable, long-lasting floor with exceptional clarity and gloss without relying on surface coatings.

Whether you are building a new home, renovating an existing slab or completing a commercial project, polished concrete floors provide a unique combination of beauty, durability and long-term value that few other flooring systems can match.

    Why Choose Polished Concrete?

Unlike many flooring systems, polished concrete floors are created by mechanically refining the concrete itself rather than covering it with a coating. Through a series of progressively finer diamond abrasives and densifiers, the concrete is transformed into a smooth, durable and highly reflective surface. Because the finish becomes part of the slab, polished concrete will not peel, delaminate or chip like many surface coatings. The result is a beautiful floor that combines exceptional durability with minimal maintenance. Polished concrete floors are resistant to heavy traffic, easy to clean and designed to last the lifetime of the building. Their light-reflective properties can also improve natural brightness and contribute to lower energy consumption.

Polished concrete is equally suited to modern homes, retail stores, shopping centres, offices, galleries, warehouses and industrial facilities. Its versatility allows it to complement both contemporary and traditional designs, while a wide range of aggregate exposures and gloss levels provide almost endless design possibilities. Unlike carpet and some other flooring materials, polished concrete does not harbour dust mites, mould, bacteria or allergens. The seamless surface makes it easy to maintain and can contribute to a healthier indoor environment, making polished concrete an excellent choice for homes, commercial spaces and high-traffic public areas alike. Whether used in a luxury home, a busy retail fit-out or a large industrial facility, polished concrete floors offer a timeless combination of beauty, practicality and long-term performance that few other flooring systems can match.

Important: Polished concrete isn’t ideal for every area. Bathrooms and wet areas must be approached differently. Multiple concrete pours may increase costs, so planning ahead is crucial.

polished concrete coloursDesign Freedom: Colours & Finishes

One of the greatest advantages of polished concrete floors is the design flexibility they offer. From subtle, natural tones to bold statement floors, polished concrete can be customised to complement virtually any architectural style. The final appearance is influenced by the colour of the concrete, the type of aggregate used and the level of exposure chosen during the polishing process. When planning a new polished concrete floor, it is important to consider these decisions before the concrete is poured. Integral colours can be added at the batching plant to create a consistent colour throughout the slab. While concrete stains can also be applied after installation, incorporating colour into the mix generally provides greater consistency and improved long-term UV stability.

The choice of aggregate is equally important. Different stone colours and sizes can dramatically change the appearance of the finished floor, particularly when selecting salt and pepper or full aggregate exposure finishes. Concrete suppliers and batching plants often offer different aggregate options, and samples should be reviewed early in the planning process to ensure the desired result is achieved. Concrete strength also plays a critical role in the quality and durability of polished concrete floors. We generally recommend a minimum 32 MPa concrete mix, as higher strength concrete provides a denser surface that polishes more consistently and delivers superior long-term performance. Early planning and communication between the builder, concreter and polishing contractor are essential to achieving the best possible finish. Our team is happy to provide advice and specifications before the slab is poured, ensuring your polished concrete floor delivers the appearance and performance you expect for years to come.

One of the most exciting aspects of polished concrete floors is the ability to customise the amount of aggregate exposure. The level of grinding determines how much stone is revealed and has a significant impact on the final appearance of the floor. From a clean, minimalist look to a striking decorative finish, there is an option to suit every home and commercial space.

      Burnished/Cream Polish –

Only the surface is polished; no stone is exposed. Think Bunnings floors. Cream polished concrete retains the surface layer of the slab with little to no aggregate exposure. This finish creates a smooth, contemporary appearance and is popular in modern homes and commercial interiors where a clean and understated look is desired.

Partial Stone Exposure –partial exposure polished concrete

Also called "hit n miss" or "salt & pepper." Some areas show more stone than others, creating a random pattern. Typically, 1–3mm of concrete is ground to achieve this look. Salt and pepper polished concrete is achieved by lightly grinding the surface to expose the fine aggregate within the concrete. This finish has become one of the most popular choices for residential homes throughout Sydney, offering character and texture while maintaining a refined appearance.

full exposure polished concreteFull Exposure Polished Concrete –

The floor is ground until stone is evenly exposed. Sometimes necessary if the concrete isn’t level. Up to 5–10mm may be removed, so careful height planning is required. Full exposure polished concrete reveals the larger aggregate throughout the slab to create a highly decorative finish similar to terrazzo. This option can transform the natural stone within the concrete into a feature and is commonly used in luxury homes, retail spaces and commercial projects where a striking floor is desired.

Whether you're building a new home, renovating an existing slab or completing a commercial fit-out, Diagrind can help you select the right polished concrete finish to suit your project, style and budget.

        Gloss Level & Slip Rating

Polished concrete floors can be tailored to suit both the appearance and performance requirements of a space. Depending on the desired look, polished concrete can be finished with a matte, satin or high-gloss sheen. In most residential and commercial applications, we recommend a satin finish or higher to maximise light reflectivity and enhance the natural beauty of the concrete.

For residential interiors, slip resistance is generally not a major concern, and the gloss level is typically selected based on aesthetics and maintenance preferences. External areas, however, require a different approach. Around pools, patios and exposed outdoor spaces, we recommend honed concrete finishes that achieve higher slip resistance ratings, typically P4 or P5, while still providing the attractive appearance of exposed concrete.

Commercial and public spaces often have specific slip resistance requirements. Depending on the intended use of the floor, polished concrete can be finished to achieve slip ratings from P1 through to P5. Whether the project is a retail store, office, warehouse or hospitality venue, we can tailor the polishing process to meet the required Australian Standards while delivering the appearance and performance you expect.
